The world isn’t without flaws. Despite the fact that everyone deserves love, care, and a
safe haven, not everyone receives them. Some people obtain these necessities, yet
even so, it may come to an end at some point. And no matter what we do, we will never
be able to completely solve these issues. Despite the world’s seemingly insurmountable
flaws, some people nevertheless have the courage and determination to try to improve
it.
This kind mother and son team is one of the few good-hearted people who have made it
their life’s mission to improve the world. Though good deeds are difficult to number,
Svetlana and Degan from Serbia have no trouble counting their own: in the more than
20 years that they’ve maintained their shelter, they’ve rescued over a thousand dogs,
with over a hundred currently living in their sanctuary.

Dejan and Svetlana began their philanthropic efforts simply by feeding the stray dogs in
Cumic, the village where they lived.

The community recognised the mother-son duo’s good deeds, and they began to
establish a reputation, as well as a larger network and resources; in other words, they
began to extend and broaden the scope of their activities.

However, the shelter industry as a whole isn’t just about domestic animals. They
purchased land in the Gledic Mountains in 2014 and built a wolf refuge. You could
wonder why there are wolves.
Despite the fact that the wolf is Serbia’s national animal, it is on the verge of extinction
and is continuously threatened by poachers. Dejan brings fresh meat whenever he can
and fights to keep them safe.

As you can expect, running a shelter by oneself is difficult.

Especially when there are hundreds of animals to care for, as it raises maintenance
costs and adds to the workload.
Dejan, for example, plans to…

Construct winter shelters and more dog houses in the near future.
However, donations from generous individuals and organisations keep the shelter
running,

And let’s hope that this continues for another 20 years!
